Daniel’s story:

I started studying level 2 AAT Accountancy in September 2016, as well as joining the team at MMG at the same time, which has been a major challenge, and I love it!

At the beginning of my course, my tutor Gill Grant and I had a meeting about finding a placement and getting my CV to various companies across the Bournemouth and Poole area – I chose MMG as it looked like a really fun company to work for.

I had my interview with two senior members of staff and the next day was offered the placement. The advertising and events industry was a trade I was interested in, so to be able to be involved within it was a perfect fit for me. When I was researching the company before my interview, I saw on the company social media channels that we had Mobile LED Screens at the Wimborne Folk Festival which I attended and remember the screen causing a real buzz at the event.

An apprenticeship was the best move for me as maths was always my strongest subject at school and I knew I didn’t want to go to university. It was never an option for me, I wanted to get onto the career ladder as soon possible, but also learn at the same time. Choosing an apprenticeship and starting in the workplace early is definitely the best way for me to progress quickly. One of my friends is two years ahead of me on the AAT course and rated apprenticeships highly, which gave me the confidence to take the plunge!

My school encouraged us to consider apprenticeships more than university because of the real life experience you get. We had various companies come in to speak to us and give us bundles of information on our options and different apprenticeships.

A typical day in the life of an accountant apprentice consists of sending out invoices to clients, sorting through company credit cards and entering purchase orders on our system. The reason I love working at MMG, is because every day is different which makes the job mentally stimulating and it’s great to be able to soak up new skills from my colleagues. Also due to the size of the company, and not working for a huge business, I have been given a lot more responsibility and am able to work across various roles within the Accounts Team, ranging from purchasing to payroll and learn how it all works. It’s incredibly beneficial for me to combine work and education as a lot of the time I action tasks at work and then I go into college and find out the reasons why I am doing them and learn the context behind the work.

In five years, I see myself as a fully qualified accountant and want to progress to be a chartered accountant as I want to be one of the best in my field, which is my driving factor. And then in ten years I want to own my own property in Bournemouth, be married and have children. That’s the dream.
